Tash’s began beside the Kowie with good food, generous hospitality and a belief that the best restaurants feel like home.
A table by the harbour
The original Tash’s grew from a simple Port Alfred idea: cook with care, welcome people warmly and let the river set the pace. It became a meeting place for long lunches, family celebrations, sunset drinks and the familiar faces that give a coastal town its character.
The dining room was shaped by its surroundings. Fishing boats, changing tides and Eastern Cape light were part of every service. The kitchen leaned into generous seafood, comforting favourites and dishes made for sharing.
Great food mattered. Making people feel welcome mattered even more.
The people behind the memories
A restaurant is never only a room or a menu. Its story belongs to the cooks, servers, suppliers, regulars and visitors who animated it. Their memories—favourite tables, celebratory meals and recipes still talked about—are the heart of the Tash’s archive.
A new chapter
Although the original restaurant is part of Port Alfred history, its spirit continues here. Tash’s is now an independent local journal covering food, restaurants, the Kowie River, coastal travel and the people creating thoughtful things along the Sunshine Coast.
